Tollywood music is very ‘dinchak’

Say the Colonial Cousins, Lesle Lewis and Hariharan, who performed in the city

THE COUSINS ARE BACK
It has been 11 years since Colonial Cousins has come out with an album. All the while, we have been thinking about coming up with one. But then we work on a complete action-reaction basis and there is no conscious effort put in. We just kept jamming and it finally happened.
FILM MUSIC VERSUS NON-FILM MUSIC
For over five years, there has been no non-film music on either the television or the radio. So, we didn’t think it would make sense to come out with an album because it would be wasted. Non-film music is where the creativity is. Film music is great, but it’s not music per se. It’s based on a story, an actor and there’s a reason why the song is like that. Yes, it’s a different medium altogether and it doesn’t necessarily come from the soul. You can’t chill and make a song for a film… you’ll have three guys sitting in front of you explaing, “kya hota hai ki… yaha actor yeh kar raha hain”… Bollywood or film music for breakfast, lunch and dinner is the staple Indian diet. If you walk into a pub in Mumbai, you will find amazing musicians. But people are so obsessed and blinded with film music that they don’t care for anything else. There’s a lot of pressure on kids today, because if they’re good, they are straightaway pushed into reality TV shows and then they come out thinking that they are the best. They have lost their chance to become better.
POWER OF MUSIC
It’s amazing what music can do and how it has the power to soothe lives. The whole idea of using music for a social cause is brilliant. In fact, at one concert, there was this lady on a stretcher by the side, and she wanted to come see the concert… they said she hadn’t been sleeping for months, and the next morning we get a text saying she slept peacefully last night. Lesle used to go play at the blind school in Mount Abu, while he studied there.
TOLLYWOOD MUSIC
Tollywood music is very ‘dinchak’. We like it, but then again, the story dictates the music. Even though we did the songs, it doesn’t have the flavour of Colonial Cousins.
