If second half of the movie holds interest, it would end up as a blockbuster. We don’t know how would be the picture of the second half of 2012 but the first half of the story so far is fab. Tollywood has witnessed highest number of hits in the last six months. Interestingly, small budgeted movies turned out to be big hits, which is a healthy sign.
The year began with a small film called Company directed by Veeru.K with a tepid note. A look at the films that were released from Jan to June starting with Company (Jan 6th) to All The Best (June 29).
January: Beginning with Businessman
Mahesh Babu’s Businessman set cash registers ring. The film was released on January 13th and went on to become second biggest hit in Mahesh Babu’s career. A day later, Venkatesh’s Bodyguard was also released and it ended up as average grosser.
February: Love brought money
In February, we had Sunil’s Poolarangadu and Nithin’s Ishq to make distributors cheer up, as both films went on to become big hits. Sunil’s Poolarangadu was a major hit. Actor Siddharth’s maiden production, Love Failure, also made money.
March: Small films, big hit
In March, Ee Rojullo, a very small budgeted movie (made with a shoestring budget of Rs 70 Lakhs) hit gold at box-office. B Jaya’s Lovely, which was released on March 30th, also gathered moolah.
April: Month of Masala movies
In April, Ram Charan’s mass masala movie, Rachcha, surprisingly went to become a big hit. Although the film didn’t win good praise, Tamannah’s glamour and songs helped the movie to score a big hit. In the same month, NTR released Dhammu but the much-hyped film could not sustain the expectations and ended as an above average movie.
May: Gabbar Singh..Gabbar Singh..
Pawan Kalyan’s Gabbar Singh smashed all records with its gigantic openings and by end of 50 days the movie took the position in the club of all time biggest blockbusters of Tollywood. And it is still running.
June: Not a rosy picture
June didn’t bring much enthusiasm to the distributors. Much anticipated films like Balakrishna’s Adhinayakudu and Ram’s Endukante Premanta failed miserably. But towards the end of the month, a small movie – Oka Romantic Crime Katha – was able to earn some money.
Dubbed movies: Bad picture!
In the first half of 2012, not a single dubbed movie especially movies dubbed from Tamil could make an impact at Andhra Pradesh Box-office. Only film that became a hit was dubbed version of The Avengers, Hollywood film. Shankar’s Snehitudu, Karthi’s Malligadu Suresh Kondeti produced Renigunta and Premalo Paditey, Jiva’s Rowdram and Dhanush’s 3 – all sank without a trace. Karthi’s recent release Shakuni took bumper openings.
Trends: Year of “form”
Several actors and technicians have come to their winning “form” this year. Pawan Kalyan who was going through rough phase until the release of Gabbar Singh is back with a bang.Nithin who had delivered nearly 10 flops in a row has struck gold with Ishq this year and his career is now blooming. Ram Charan whose career was going nowhere in the last two years is back with a success this year. So is Siddharth with Love Failure. After a long time, director Puri Jagannadh has finally delivered a big hit with Businessman. Shruthi Haasan tasted her first success this year too.
